The NBPA honoured two emerging leaders in the pharmacy profession with the Scott Knowles Memorial New Practitioner Service Award on Saturday at their Awards Gala held as part of the New Brunswick Pharmacy Conference. Jill Lawrence of Fredericton developed and led an innovative smoking cessation program at St. Mary’s First Nation; and, Mallory Price, a pharmacist at the Moncton Hospital, is playing an active role on the development of new pharmacists by her strong commitment to mentoring.
This award is presented to a new pharmacist (five years or less since graduation) for exceptional service through innovation or contributions to his/her community.
Mallory Price has emerged as a strong leader and a committed mentor in our profession and a shining example of the important work pharmacists do in hospitals. A graduate of Dalhousie University’s College of Pharmacy in 2012, Mallory completed her residency at the Moncton Hospital. She began her career at the Alberta South Health Campus in Calgary just as the major flood in 2013 happened. She stepped in and assisted during this time of crisis and later worked as a preceptor for students in the Emergency Room and at Women and Children’s Health. She also volunteered with the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.
Mallory returned to New Brunswick in 2016 and quickly became an active participant in direct patient care in the neuro-stepdown unit at the Moncton Hospital. She took on a role at the Regional Pharmacy Professional Council for Horizon Health Network and then joined the Emergency Department Pharmacy team where she has been a preceptor of pharmacy and military residents. She brings thoughtful, relevant and specific feedback to her learners and is playing an important role in the development of future pharmacy leaders.
Approximately 200 New Brunswick pharmacists attended the annual conference held over the weekend at the Delta in Saint John. The conference included the annual general meetings of the NBPA, the New Brunswick College of Pharmacists and the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (NB chapter) as well as professional development sessions. Keynote speaker David Coletto of Abacus Data spoke about: “The Millennials: How this generation is changing everything, including pharmacy.”
