New Brunswickers agree that pharmacists help them the most when it comes to understanding their prescription medications.
NB PharmaCheck™ is a medication review program to help patients get the most benefit from their medications. These in-person, 20-30 minute discussions with a member of your pharmacy team can improve your knowledge of your medications, including:
- the names of your medications
- why you are taking these medications
- the best way to take your medications
- any special instructions for the proper use of your medications
In a 2015 study, 30% of Canadians reported not using their medications as directed. The knowledge gained during a medication review can enhance the potential benefits and reduce the potential risks of taking your medications, leading to improved therapeutic results.
Patients who meet the following criteria are eligible for one publicly-funded medication review each year (April 1 to March 31):
- covered by one of the following New Brunswick Prescription Drug Program (NBPDP) plans:
- Seniors (Plan A)
- Dept. of Social Development clients (Plans E / F)
(and)
- taking 3 or more chronic prescription medications. (Medications used for the treatment of chronic disease, e.g. diabetes, hypertension, etc.)

In 2009-2010, New Brunswick Pharmacists' Association collaborated with the New Brunswick Department of Health and the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) to pilot a medication review program called NB PharmaCheck. Forty-eight pharmacies participated in the program, which uses CPhA’s PharmaCheck patient screening form. Results from a participant satisfaction survey were very positive, reflecting improved knowledge, management and changes related to taking medication.
